Sherlock Holmes is a fictional private detective created by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Referred to as a "consulting detective" in the stories, Holmes is renowned for his adeptness in observation, forensic science, and logical reasoning that teeters on the extraordinary. These skills are put to use when tackling cases for a diverse clientele that includes Scotland Yard.
Debuting in print in 1887 (in A Study in Scarlet), the character's popularity grew significantly with the inaugural series of short stories in The Strand Magazine, commencing with "A Scandal in Bohemia" in 1891. Subsequent narratives were published from then until 1927, culminating in four novels and 56 short stories. With one exception, all are situated in the Victorian or Edwardian eras, unfolding between approximately 1880 and 1914. The majority of these tales are recounted by Holmes's confidant and chronicler, Dr. Watson, who frequently joins Holmes during investigations and often resides with him at the renowned 221B Baker Street in London, where many cases originate.
Although not the first fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes arguably stands as one of the most recognizable, meriting recognition from Guinness World Records as the "most portrayed movie character" in history. The widespread popularity and renown surrounding Holmes have led many to contemplate him not as a fictional creation but as an actual person; consequently, multiple literary and fan associations have been formed under this presumption. Broadly acknowledged as a British cultural icon, the character and tales have exerted a profound and enduring influence on mystery literature and popular culture overall. The original stories authored by Conan Doyle and numerous adaptations penned by other writers have been transformed into stage plays, radio dramas, television shows, movies, video games, and various other forms of media across more than a century.
